Almost nothing LKQ sells is a new part from the original manufacturer. It distributes the alternatives: parts pulled from total loss vehicles bought at regional salvage auctions, parts reconditioned or remanufactured, and aftermarket parts built by other factories. What cannot be sold as a part gets sold as material, with dismantled vehicles crushed on site, damaged wheel cores melted in the company's own aluminum furnace, and precious metals recovered from catalytic converters. Headquarters is on Crossings Boulevard in Antioch, Tennessee. The company ended 2025 employing about 44,000 people, roughly 17,000 in North America, 25,000 in Europe, and 2,000 in Asia.
Warehouses and cross-dock facilities are the spine of the North American operation, and that is where the material handling lives: receiving imported aftermarket stock that can take 40 days or more to arrive, moving salvage inventory through dismantling and processing, and loading a fleet of trucks and vans that carry several product lines on shared routes.
