The Library of Congress is a legislative branch agency whose service units include the U.S. Copyright Office and the Congressional Research Service, which works for Congress alone. The Library calls itself the largest in the world, counting millions of books, films, audio recordings, photographs, newspapers, maps, and manuscripts, and it groups the collections work under Discovery and Preservation Services, the Law Library, the National Library for the Blind and Print Disabled, and Researcher and Collections Services. The Copyright Royalty Board and an Inspector General sit alongside them.
Acquiring, organizing, maintaining, securing, and preserving the collections is written into the Library Collections and Services Group's remit, and at this scale that is a logistics problem: crates arriving, shelving, storage, and transfers between the Madison, Jefferson, and Adams buildings. That work belongs to the Library's back-of-house operations, in the Logistics Services Division, not in the reading rooms.
