The BIA works for American Indians and Alaska Natives, and its stated purpose is to enhance quality of life, promote economic opportunity, and protect and improve the trust assets it holds on their behalf, done by directly supporting tribal governments through self-governance agreements. The authority runs back to the Snyder Act of 1921 and the treaties beside it. Staff work with tribal governments and members on employment and job training, law enforcement and justice, agriculture and economic development, tribal governance, and natural resources programs.
