In 1897 a 23-year-old named Isaac Van Westenbrugge borrowed $300 from his brother and started delivering butter and eggs around Grand Rapids, Michigan. A teenager, Ben Gordon, came to work for him unloading margarine and candling eggs, later married Isaac's daughter Ruth, and eventually gave the company its name. Gordon Food Service is a family-operated broad-line foodservice distributor in North America, now run by the fourth and fifth generations, and it also runs Gordon Food Service Stores, which began as a Cash & Carry counter for delivery customers who needed a little extra.

Broad-line distribution lives in distribution centers and trucks, and the company widened its territory partly by hauling two trailers at a time rather than putting up more buildings, which keeps selecting, loading, and dock work at the center of it.
