The G and the W are Harry Gear and Paul Williams, two distribution utility engineers who invented the detachable porcelain pothead in a small Chicago machine shop in 1905 and built a company around it. G&W Electric still makes switchgear, reclosers, cable accessories, sensors, and grid automation equipment, and its list of firsts includes the first fully submersible SF6 switchgear in 1974. The global headquarters is in Bolingbrook, Illinois, with manufacturing at Blue Island, Illinois, Brampton, Ontario, Shanghai, San Luis Potosí, two sites in Italy, and Safegrid in Espoo, Finland.

Switchgear and reclosers are heavy equipment, built and production-tested at the Illinois plants before they ship, so material handling and shipping work runs right alongside the assembly floor.
