Certco started in 1930 when five retailers around Madison, Wisconsin, pooled their buying to get better prices, under the name Central Wisconsin Cooperative Food Stores. A warehouse followed in 1942, set up in a downtown garage. The name became Certified Grocer's CO-OP in 1956, the distribution center moved to its present site in 1962, and Certco, Inc. arrived in 1975. It now stocks more than 60,000 items in just under a million square feet of distribution space and supplies over 200 independent grocery stores across Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, and Iowa.
